The news out of Washington seems to be a petri dish for growing cynicism and a sense of helplessness: it seems nothing changes, and power’s power to corrupt only feeds on itself and grows ever stronger.
The news out of Oklahoma is that seven out of the twenty-four people who perished in yesterday’s devastating tornado were children. Funny how the pain of the national wound is the same, whether inflicted by the gun of a madman or by Mother Nature’s fury. This time, there’s just no crazed gunman to blame.
The news out of Minnesota is what opened the floodgates for me, though. The tears spilled when I saw that Zach Sobiech died yesterday, too.
All of it together makes me just hurt. I imagine the same is true for many of the rest of you: it’s a hard, hard world in which we live. Mother Nature seems to be in open revolt against us. Children are dying, God, so many children are dying. And, cancer is still clawing at us.
But, Zach beat it, and I wanted to share his story with you, because focusing on the power of his sweet spirit and his simple message: “just make someone else happy”, and emulating that as best you can where ever you are is the best way to fight back against the beasts that rage against us all.
Thank you, Zach.
